A Simple Breathing Ritual for Restless Nights
Sleep is one of the few things in life that gets harder the harder you try. The mind monitors, evaluates, worries about not sleeping — and the monitoring itself keeps you awake.
This small ritual works because it gives the monitoring mind a simple, boring job.
Lying comfortably, bring your fingertips gently together. Breathe in through the nose for a slow count of three. Hold softly for three. Then exhale for a count of six — the exhale is double the inhale — and as you breathe out, let the fingers drift apart, let the jaw loosen, let the shoulders drop. That long release is the signal: it tells the nervous system the day is over and it is safe to power down.
Now weave in the words. On each exhale — as the fingers, jaw, and shoulders let go — silently say a single word: calm, or relaxed. Let the word arrive with the breath rather than forcing it. If thoughts wander, that is fine; noticing you drifted is not failure, it is the practice.
Repeat for about three minutes, or until you notice the edges softening. Most nights, you will not remember finishing.
And if restless nights have become the rule rather than the exception, this ritual is a good beginning — but the deeper work of retraining sleep is exactly what sessions are for.
